“Mæander” is a series of 17 generated outputs depicting river delta segments, created by Danish artist RuneBrink / Aka. Spøgelsesmaskinen for bitforms gallery 2025.
In the 1800s, natural Danish rivers were straightened and regulated to make the landscape more suitable for farming. Rivers in nature have a natural ability to meander in arching movements, watering and nourishing large areas, and creating cutoffs that leave small lakes along the way.
This natural flow of water is even believed by some to preserve the life-giving qualities of the water through its continuous natural restructuring.
Since 2024, several efforts have been made to restore rivers to a free-flowing state by 2030, both in the EU and in Denmark.
This artwork was generated using Meanderpy, an open-source Python module developed at The University of Texas at Austin for simulating river meandering, as described by Howard & Knutson (1984). Apache License 2.0 https://github.com/zsylvester/meanderpy/tree/master
